Senator Valencia Seay is a Democrat representing Senate District 34, which includes portions of Clayton and Fayette counties.
Senator Seay is a member of the Appropriations, Government Oversight, Public Safety, and Science and Technology committees. She is also an ex-officio member of the Senate Transportation Committee.
Retired from a 22-year career in banking, Senator Seay is president and CEO of Seay & Associates. She has been elected to several positions within state and local government in her career, including the Georgia Senate (2003-present), Georgia House of Representatives (2001-02), Clayton County Board of Education (1993-2000), vice chair of the State Senate Democratic Caucus (2005-present) and chair of the Clayton County Legislative Delegation (2005-06).
Recently, Senator Seay was given the Katherine Peterson Angel Heart Award from Phenomenal Women’s Health, Inc. and Rainbow PUSH award in 2013 for her community advocacy. In 2009, she was appointed to 1st vice chair of the National Black Caucus of State Legislators (NBCSL) CoTelecommunications, Science and Technology by NBCSL’s president and fellow Georgian, Representative Calvin Smyre of Columbus. Senator Seay has also been appointed to the NBCSL Executive Committee, the Georgia School Board Association Federal Relation Network, Georgia School Board Association Ethics Committee and as vice -president of the Clayton County Board of Education.
Throughout her career, she has been closely involved with various civic groups. Recently, she was honored for her community activism by Lite House Partners Inc. with the dedication of a new activity center in College Park named the Valencia Seay Center. The center will provide a free academic and safe after-school and summer program for children in the Lakeview Trails Apartment community.
She is also a Life Member of the NAACP and the National Council of Negro Women. She is very active with the Georgia Legislative Black Caucus, where she serves as vice chair, and the Georgia Association of Black Elected Officials.
Senator Seay also supports the advancement of women as a member of the National Organization of Women Legislators, Women in Government and the Women’s Legislative Caucus, where she has served as a tri-chair from 2007 to 2008. In 2007, Sen. Seay was honored by the Clayton County chapter of the NAACP with Senator Valencia Seay Senate District 34 Sen. Seay received the 2015 Alpha Kappa Alpha Capitol Legislator of the Year Award for her longstanding commitment to the people of the 34th Senate District and her unwavering support for the advancement of women.
Senator Seay studied at DeKalb College, Clayton State University, and the Flemming Fellows Leadership Institute. She also completed the 2009 and 2011 Legislative Health Policy Certificate Program from Georgia State University’s Andrew Young School of Policy Studies.
Senator Seay is married to Walter, and they have two children and four grandchildren. The Seays are members of the Antioch Baptist Church North.
